Why the recession is the perfect time for businesses to recruit new female talent
The current economic climate gives businesses where women are currently under-represented, the perfect opportunity to address this issue and achieve their specific diversity goals. As a result of the economic downturn, many candidates are now exploring career options which they might not have considered a year ago.
According to the CIPD, more graduates are now considering careers in teaching and the civil service. This is great news for these sectors. However, these sectors shouldn’t be the only ones benefitting, says Veronica Akinyemi (CEO, Employ A Woman). In her opinion, companies in sectors such as Construction, Engineering, IT, Transport, Logistics, Sports, Defence etc., should be taking maximum advantage of the situation and identifying new recruitment strategies that would ensure that they attract smart and talented women. She explains that dynamic businesses could even start training and development schemes that will focus on training females who have a different career background, but possess excellent transferable skills.
According to her, it is worrying that Britain as a nation is yet to fully tap into the skills portfolio of women. According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Girls now out-perform boys at many levels of secondary education, and nearly three out of five recent first degree graduates are women. Employ A Woman’s upcoming National Recruitment and Professional Development event taking place at the London Hilton on Park Lane, Mayfair in May 2009, is a unique opportunity for top employers to get connected with smart women of diverse sectors.
